Here is what we have to give in the way of environment expansion
under MS-DOS. The three files labeled ENVXPAND.xxx are the complete shareware
files as we originally received them. It works as documented under PC-DOS,
as far as the environment expansion goes, but doesn't seem to get all the
variables necessary to truly move the keyboard buffer as documented. The
version labeled NEWENV.SYS has been disassembled, modified, and reassembled
so that it works correctly under MS-DOS.v.2. (I think that the problem here
was that there are actually two sets of pointers to the keyboard buffer, and
the original ENVXPAND was only setting one of them. The author of the program
has been notified, and perhaps he'll see fit to release a new, official
version. For now, you have what we did. (Sorry, but I can't release source
that isn't mine to give.) It has not been tested, but may actually work
under MS-DOS v.3, if you're lucky. There do seem to be patches floating
around for PC-DOS v.3 to increase the environment, but I can't seem to find
the newsletter that I saw them in. A friend told me that there is another
way still to do the job under either DOS, v.3.x.
"There is an undocumented toggle in the shell= line for config.sys. Try a
line of the form shell=command.com /e:x, where x is the size of the desired
environment in paragraphs." I haven't tried it myself, but it might work.
Good luck, and feel free to send me Email if you run into trouble....
